Duke has expressed interest in reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

Per Stadium’s Jeff Goodman, Duke has shown interest in Maryland guard Darryl Morsell who could decide to return for one more college basketball season in 2021-2022.

Morsell has started at least 20 games in all four of his college seasons at Maryland. The six-foot-five, 200 pound guard is an elite defender. In fact, he is the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Morsell would help replace the loss of Jordan Goldwire.

Morsell is not a major offensive threat, but he is capable of contibuting on the offensive end of the floor. He averaged 9.0 points per game last season for Maryland and his career average is 8.7 points per game. He has never averaged less than 8.5 points per game in a season. Though he is not a high volume scorer, he consistenly contributes in the scoring department.

He is not much of a playmaker, but is coming off a career best 2.8 assists per game last season. He rebounds well for his size, with a career average of 4.0 rebounds per game.

It is not clear how aggresively Duke is pursuing Morsell, but he would be an excellent addition for Duke. He would bring toughness and experience to Duke’s back court and help bolster the depth on the team. Adding a former Defensive Player of the Year would do wonders for this Duke team.

Morsell has not yet decided if he will return for another college season or declare for the NBA draft, but is leaning towards returning to college next season. His name will be one to monitor in the coming days.
